promises to keep

“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
...Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” Gen. 9:13, 15b (NIV)

pledges
dear to my heart
like a lifeline

you give me them
tokens
of eloquence
of conscience
of consciousness
of conscientiousness

i have fixed
my heart on them
because mine they are
from you
my bond
not of wild winds that trail
or trade winds that wind
or spirits that falter
unsheltered
from helter skelter
misgivings

i’m not time’s fool
to drool
o’er empty comforts
of paradise plums
parading
in rainbow guises

red smiles
and orange manicures
float me not in
yellow submarines
for green envy and
blue moods do not
indigo sunsets fashion
of violet skies

if you must break
your promises take
them back
before they morph
and let me die now
that i may live then

for Somebody
bigger than you
has painted me
a rainbow
not of pale colours
but of permanence
sealed by
unshakable wisdom
whereby death shall die
before my soul
shall ever drown again

Think of the rainbow as a promise for each day of the week. While the earth remains, you shall never run out of promises, as the days grow into weeks, the weeks grow into months, the months grow into years, the years to decades, and the decades to millennia.
