Hop Frog

Hop Frog
Hop Frog
Treated like a dog
By aristocratic hogs
Harassed mercilessly
Tormented for his deformity
So he tied eight buffoons with a chain
And dressed them up as orangutans
When the King tried to guess their names
Hop Frog set the lot aflame
In an incandescent blaze

Hop Frog
Hop Frog
Did you get your sweet revenge,
Hearing them scream in pain
Till their very end?
Well my little jester
As it turns out
You’re quite the monster
Author's Note
The above poem is based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s lesser known works, Hop Frog. The story centers on a two dwarfs, who are enslaved, for the King and his Court’s amusement.  One is Hop Frog, named so because his deformed legs allow him to move with a hopping like gait.  The other is Treppetta, Hop Frog’s sweetheart.  Constantly the victim of his tormentors, Hop Frog finally decides to seek revenge when the King throws a glass of wine in Treppetta’s face.
So, Hop Frog devises a plan.  He convinces the group to dress-up like orangutans for a masquerade party and chain themselves together.  Little do they know, the costume material that Hop Frog provided is highly flammable.  A single spark from a torch, and the whole lot is burned alive while Hop Frog and Treppetta make good their esca
