seeing

I can see the special in you,
take it out and warm it up.
Let it have a break from the worry.
I'll be the first to quit talking about it
like it's not in the room,
lead it out into my courtyard of a head.
Let it undress to its level of comfort
and sunbathe in me.

Because I have learned living is nothing
without the smiles between people,
the eyes locking
and letting each other know
we see.
Because we do. How could we not?
When hazel hooks hazel
and takes us from conversation
to a cloudy walk
to a little joint in the hammock out by the levee
to your house
and immediately holding you through the night
the way you crave it,
cozy, my arms for your blanket -
I know my vision to be true.
because I see - really see you -
and I don't ignore what I see.

also, now, I'm trembling,
smiling,
holding another black mugful in my mittens,
fogging my glasses with wisps of caffeine
I do not need.
I used to take people like tests
and fret and fret,
but now
they are part of a garden
of mine, and I
keep my flowers wet.

Keep everything in sight.
Tell them you see.

in the meantime, I light these dimples
and sip this coffee
and feel every moment of this gift of a February,
just enjoying my freedom.
