Indian Mound Woman
Indian Mound Woman
The turquoise sky shines above her like a crystal sphere of blown glass. The forest below is a dark ocean of green. Chlorophyll colors stream into her eyes.
She feels waves of exquisite bliss penetrate the core of her feminine essence. She gazes down from atop the secondary knoll of Emerald Mound. Her solitude is complete with her alone upon the nipple rising from the breast of mother earth.
Laura descends the stairs to stroll the grassy ceremonial plaza. Her body is bathed in June heat. Her thin summer dress clings to her moist skin.
Laura’s adobe curves smolder with the golden heat of creation. She sheds her shoes to tread the Indian earth in barefoot beatitude.
As she walks in reverential meditation, she glances at her feet. There is a patch of Indian Paint Brush in full scarlet bloom. Laura knows that the flower parts are edible. They have similar health benefits to eating garlic. However, this is true only when ingested in moderation. The roots and green parts of the plant, if consumed, are highly toxic. Indians consume the medicinal flowers. They use them to treat sexually transmitted diseases and improve the immune system. Some tribes use it to stop menstrual flow. Laura plucks a bunch and slips them into her purse. Perhaps it will be a natural birth control for her.
She doesn’t want to have a child with the man she needs space from. She is here to find her center away from him. But he has imprinted himself in a place so deep and hidden that she never wants to be purged of him.
The first time she kissed him she felt like he had completed the circuit of her life. It was as though there was a gap which only he could bridge. He penetrated the very chromosomes of her being.
When he told her she was the perfect woman, she felt like she’d been put on a pedestal so far above him that she could never reach him again. He loved to photograph her naked form. But his adoration grew so much that she became deified in his mind. How can he love a Goddess? She was no longer a woman but had become a supernatural being.
He stopped having intercourse with Laura for fear of defiling her. She felt so alone in her elevation that the world stopped for her. She pondered how she could return to being a mortal woman in his eyes. Here she found refuge under the sea of blue sky.
Laura feels the moist grass beneath her feet. Each step takes her deeper into the sacred mystery of this place. She needs to know the answer to her plight. Her car waits to enfold her in the illusion of security. So she slips her shoes on. She sits on the edge overlooking her car. An African American woman, in a colorful ethnic dress, walks up and speaks to her. She says, “I’ve sat in that place for hours. It is a power spot.” Laura smiles and agrees. In this nexus of ancient energy, Laura finds peace. Finally, she is ready to lay down the line with Sam.
Back at his studio, he says, “Laura, I know you’ve been feeling the maternal instinct and are desirous of motherhood. Having children requires planning. How can I help you go through the steps to your dream fulfillment?”
“You can start by making love to me. That is how pregnancy occurs or so I was taught.”
“Now Laura, we aren’t financially ready to support a family. But I have witnessed your suffering from my negligence to your womanly needs. How can I make up to you what I’ve put you through?”
“How many times do I have to say it? Take me as a man does a woman.”
“And so shall I. Your concupiscent needs will be fulfilled. I only ask that you use birth control until we are in a position to feed and clothe our progeny.”
“I’ll keep on top of it.”
“And so shall I, you.”
Laura takes a casual approach to birth control. Though she understands the reason behind her husband’s decision, her instinct says otherwise.
With quivering lips, she approaches Sam. She says, “Sam, I miss you photographing me. I am tickled pink to be made love to by you. I guess if the choice was between being screwed or getting made into a picture, the former would be my preference.”
“You can have your cake and eat it too. I always wanted to take a series of you around the house washing dishes, sweeping, and mopping.”
“Oh Sam, you putting me on Polaroid in those traditional roles would be fun. Let me put on my apron as my only clothing while I perform those chores for your ever watchful camera.” Laura slips out of her dress and into her apron. Sam snaps a roll of film of her doing her normal things around the house.
Finally, Sam hugs her with his hands caressing her bare derriere. The moment feels right for her. She leads him to the bed where his dream comes true under her guidance. For the first time, she mounts him from on top and does the work of eliciting him into the fullness which promises conception. While rolling atop him she whispers, “I haven’t been using contraception. Is it ok to keep going?”
He arches his back in answer to her new deal. She rides him into the world of parenting ahead of schedule but right on time.
“No more talk about the pill now ok?”
“My latest budgeting shows we can make it.”
“Also, you may not put on a condom. If I catch you wearing a rubber there will be an urgent need for me to go to the kitchen to make omelets before the expiration date on the eggs passes by.”
