Broken Promises

She promised a visit to heaven
To her flat she did beckon
But in the event
She did lament
Illness prevented the action

I visited her flat one day
She had promised we could play
She had urgent work
She could not shirk
So what was the point of my stay

We arranged a weekend away
She was keen right up to the day
Then fate intervened
Promise unredemed
At home she had to stay

Do her promises exceed her daring
Does she find the thought scaring
Gets cold feet
Excuses complete
Finds a reason for procrastinating

My hopes have been resilient
But after this discouragement
I feel let down
Am I a clown?
In expecting their fulfillment
