Memories, O, How They Never Know When They've Abused Their Welcome

Drifting on a memory
alone and through the night
Try to hide effortlessly
Sleepy eyes in candlelight.

Ensnared within a mystery
Her face now drifts from sight
Sleep now grows restlessly
Her treasured moments bright.

Loving words, echo from my past
I try to flee this memory lane
She said our love would ever last
Distance wouldn't cause it to wane.

My mind drifting over again
My mind sees only the dark
If we were near, what might 'ave been?
O, how has uncertainty entered the heart.

Inebriated and not too pure
Loneliness is much to bear
Inebriated and not too sure
Memories make me aware.

I toss and turn in bed
until I begin instead
to dream of something
I've managed to fabricate within my head.

O, how some memories lie in wait
for a quiet opportunity to nearer creep
And sometimes I hear them, too late
to run away in my sleep.

They never know when to leave
Just as I never know of
which ones I should keep.
