Warming up to a Stranger

Tread lightly in this cold shadow
trust with risk of malice aforethought
from frozen oceans deep, to thin ice of shores shallow
treacheries are seeped into perilous waters which dangers are fraught
enter the iris of this still stare the wise do not
so damaged is the glacial calm, on approach whipping winds lash for blood
it bleeds from the warmth it has been shown
treat it with all the prejudged guilt of a ruining flood
if you cannot just avoid it, and leave it alone.

Author's Note
Trust should be earned. Hard won even. Some people just don't deserve to have it based on a good first impression and a lack of knowledge of their past. I wish I could say I didn't feel as though I were one of those people. I have guilt, and shame, and remorse that I carry for pain that I have caused. I cannot let you get too close to me until I am the master of myself and won't hurt someone that way again. I'm sorry.
