Vexation
My heart and mind, both in disarray.
Both left to ponder their battered state.
The cruelty of this world I question every day.
I have yet to find the answers I seek.
Why has war become normality?
A pool of blood now as common as a drop of water.
So many denied the right to a full life.
These aren’t just the pains of the battlefield; these are the struggles of the slums as well.
Why is hatred so deeply engraved in hearts the world over?
We’ve let our differences stop us from enjoying love and friendship.
Race, religion, and sexuality have become barriers to peace.
Why can’t acceptance be a universal language?
Why must greed cause us to distrust our protectors?
Those who lead us live blinded by fortune.
While they line their pockets, people continue to suffer.
For riches will we trade our souls?
These question sadden me, the lack of answers even more so.
Every day I question the universe and live in vexation.
