Just Outside the Gates
Who is this just outside the gates ?
The dropping of metaphoric hints
Mordancy masqueraded and applied
Precursor of promulgation
Summon all the captains
Call out the guard
Potentates, kingdoms and communities
The many faces and names
Recognized and recorded
Seemingly appeased and definitely regulated
Potentates and their kingdoms
Mere puppets and provinces
Subservient to the empire
Walls and towers rising
Keeping barbarians from the gates
Keeping order within
Wills readily submitted
Loyalty demanded and pledged
Weeding out dissidence from between flagstones
Another gilded shit hole marring life
Another empire’s decline and fall
Caste system, position and servitude
The irony of starving beside a vomitorium
Genocidal generals and evil emperors
Admired as heroes and made into living gods
Silk clad priesthood and the religion of state
Singing praises and selling prayers
Wealthy beyond belief and tended well by their flocks
Enslavement, a false sense of security
Lords and ladies seemingly of great virtue
Entertained nightly by the ancient whore of Babylon
Reveling in your own rotting decay
While Jupiter, Jehovah and Jesus are fast asleep
While we barbarians are just outside your gates
How many times must we breach your walls ?
How many times must we tear your empires down ?
