My Garden

I planted seeds in the desert soil
From arid land arose
a private little oasis
Many wonderful things grow here
There are the onions, the chives, the chard
Beautiful squash spreads his umbrella leaves
endive and dark green kale
lush basil keeps my tomatoes company
Slender stem of okra for my beans to climb
and the magical chiltepin
grows under the guava tree
Flowers speckled inbetween
to attract the bees and butterflies
These plants are my children
I give them tender love and care
they feed me in return
What more satisfying thing can be
than turning desert
into garden
