Image for the poem Cold

Cold

I watched the tears
roll down her face

Her eyes were pools
of sorrow and
drowned there within,
hopes of a future
soon never to be

Through it all I sat
impassive, indifferent,
a quiet observer
asking myself repeatedly
why I felt nothing inside

I used to love her and
she brought me such joy

Somewhere it just passed
and I could not pretend

I became as sterile
and cold to her as
a winter tree to the sky

I'll never forgive myself
for the pain I caused
with no reciprocation

What awful hidden
damages turn the heart
off like a switch?
