Chance Encounter

As I approuched the crow
it made no attempt to move

It stood off to the side
of the walkway and when I
looked down at it in passing
it slowly opened and closed
it's beak one time

I wondered if it was
a silent greeting

Perhaps it was requesting
a morsel to eat

Maybe it was an expression
of gratitude
for me not preying on it

Or as a symbol of the
Underworld it may have
merely granted me
one further day above ground

Whichever, if any, the case may
have been, I'd always hoped
it hadn't been hungry
