Damn Memories

In night's blackest hours I think of you
Are you safe? Are you sleeping
far away from your waking problems?

Where there was once promise
all is painted over with loss
The pains and regrets created from
festering and untreated addictions

Now apart we have both lost so much
from those distant times & anticipation
of a future now dry as dunes of sand

But in my pain and isolation
I can still recall your smile
I can still hear your uncontrolled laughter
I can still feel your deep sleeping breaths

Just so much we weren't ready for
Eager to chase an idea of together
while still too closely haunted
by recent pasts

Time has never been a friend to me
