Not Letting the Darkness Win
The darkness threatens to hit me
Like a ton of bricks, but today and
Every other day to follow I will not
Let it win. The way it wants to see
Me when I am having a bad hand
And when the darkness caught
Me in a weak moment, I cannot
Let it take advantage of my shield
Or vulnerability. It would watch
Me become hopeless and helpless.
I cannot let it keep killing my field
Of sunflowers and I was not a notch
On its bedpost. I am not defenseless
Or becoming its conquest anymore.
It has nothing on the woman I became
Because I had to rise from the darkness.
I will not invite it in or open the door
To welcome it home. It has no name
And no reason to feel its starkness.
Like a ton of bricks, but today and
Every other day to follow I will not
Let it win. The way it wants to see
Me when I am having a bad hand
And when the darkness caught
Me in a weak moment, I cannot
Let it take advantage of my shield
Or vulnerability. It would watch
Me become hopeless and helpless.
I cannot let it keep killing my field
Of sunflowers and I was not a notch
On its bedpost. I am not defenseless
Or becoming its conquest anymore.
It has nothing on the woman I became
Because I had to rise from the darkness.
I will not invite it in or open the door
To welcome it home. It has no name
And no reason to feel its starkness.
