Really? Sadly, Yes.
11:30 pm
TV tuned to BBC America, "Blue Plant II", as I read poems here on DU.
A fish that picks up and spits a shell into a harden coral repeatedly, until the shell shatters and the creature within is exposed and eaten.
It is then I remember a wild crow, being shown making a hook at the end of a stick, and then using the stick to retrieve grubs from a hole in a tree.
Sea Otters, pounding clams against a rock on their stomach while floating on their back, in order to open the shell. Not just any old rock, but one especially chosen for the task.
Wild Chimpanzees, using a piece of dried grass, sticking it into a termite mound, then feasting on the poor insects that dared to latch onto it as it is withdrawn.
Yes, other life forms using tools, just as we have learned, even making the tool at times.
These, and so many more eye opening observations, that show there is more intelligence in the creatures that surround us than we ever imagined before.
Then I remember watching many "social media" posts of people attempting various acts that boggle the mind, and this thought reverses.

Yes I've watched bits of that programme
Indeed amazing how intelligent other creatures are and how unintelligent we can be when compared in similar contexts
What we all master race now cause we can enslave, beat & kill our own kind in beyond barbaric ways
History is full of horrid humans
As a species we're bottom of the Intelegence list in my opinion

Probably 75% of my TV watching time is spent on PBS programming,
nature, history, space and now beginning to watch Book TV also. 0% spent on "reality?? TV shows". I find it fascinating how little we actually know about the world around us. And yet the sheer lunacy of some people fascinates even more.
And yes, Rose, the inhumanity of mankind, not fascinating, only sorrowful and deployable.
Thanks for stopping by, always nice when you take time to do so.

LMAO at your closing line of thought...
Yea, I laughed but the fact of the matter is, it's not truly funny watching/knowing
there are some people that do the dumbest shit ever, boggling the mind...
Also, I'm a huge fan of all the wildlife, planet shows...pretty amazing stuff they capture...

Agreed. What some will do for attention, just to find out if it can be done, or see what will happen, at times astounds me. That they're silly enough to try is bad enough, and like you, saddening when they don't even appear to realize how stupid it is.
And yes, PBS, the real "reality TV".
Always appreciate your appearance, Poe.

Re: Re. Really? Sadly, Yes.
Indeed we don't, as we sit upon our self designated throne, basking in our ill-conceived superiority to all that surrounds us. Our narcissism in context with our perceived stature on this planet can be sickening.
And yes, though the foolishness I see of others in their actions makes me laugh at times, it really only displays our own deficiencies as a species, in the wider scope of things, and I do not exclude myself in this matter, for there are many times in retrospect I think "Boy, that was stupid, what was I thinking".
Truly appreciate your presence, Hans.

Planet Earth 2 was astounding, like, absolutely perception-shattering astounding.
The world and it's inhabitants are more beautiful, complex, and impressive than fiction. Us poets need take heed <3

Re: Re. Really? Sadly, Yes.
So true, the more I am able to observe, the more I realize just how unenlightened I am.
I truly believe we have so much yet to learn and come to appreciate about this planet we are privileged to reside on and our coinhabitants as well.
So good to see others, like yourself, feel the same. It gives me hope that maybe some day we all will come to cherish the gift we have been given.
Thank you, AMb, for the smiles you leave in your wake.

Thank you Teri, absolutely! It really is a privilege and a huge adventure! Admittedly I don't get out enough simply to take advantage of it all. We don't need fancy VR or fancy entertainment to enjoy life.
I hope other do too :)

Animals are quite simply amazing. Humans, sometimes, not so much.

An entire poem, a string of comments and replies, reduced to ten words.
Now, that's amazing.
Well spoken, SS.

Couldn’t agree more - animals outweigh the human species easily in my eye ;)
I certainly respect and love all my animals far more than I do most human beings.

We certainly do not give other species their due. That is beginning to change, though it will take years before any appreciable effect will trickle down to the general populace. In the meantime, we must continue being their advocate at every turn and speak out against
things not in their best interests.
Thank you, sophie for weighing in on this piece.

Yep, bet the BBC won't be capturing any wild monkeys on film, riding a bicycle off a rooftop into a pile of pillows anytime soon. :-)))
Much appreciate the stop by, Sir.

Hey Teri, the Gentoo Penquin fascinates me, did you know this particular Penquin searches high and low for the perfect, most desirable rock on the entire beach to give to his mate, once given they are mates for life. Not all Penquins do this, the Gentoo first and foremost. Did you also know the female is the huntress while the male remains behind protecting & nuturing the young. Of course you do, I found this poem & your replies a definite thought provoked. Screw humanity I wanna go where the wildlife are clever instead of what passes as humanity that we now face. I absolutely love how you captured nature's critters in all their glory. Respectfully,
Shadow

HI Shadow
Though I was not aware of the Gentoo Penguin's particular traits, I have learned males of various species, court mates in a multitude of ways and tend to be the more colorful of the species for that purpose, with the females being less so, simply for camouflage reasons, yet there are exceptions to this also.
I find one can spend a lifetime concentrating on one or a few things, from the inner workings of the mind to the cosmos and everything in between which is good, for how else do we learn.
I, on the other hand, am fascinated by nearly everything around me and truly believe everything is interconnected, either directly or indirectly, from the food chain, to how we have arrived at this place in time, or what we perceive as time, for even that can be questioned, as time may be nothing more than how we experiences it, the same as with reality, i.e. is one persons reality the same as another's, or does it change depending on how the biological computer, which is our brain, interprets it.
I apologize for taking you off on my tangent, I have a habit of doing that.
As for humanity, well, we could accomplish so much more with what has been gifted us, if only we would put our differences aside and move our species forward.
Thank you for the visit, comment, and indulging me (if you're still reading this, lol), and the RL is icing on the cake you have presented me.

I'm with the same thought process. Humanity, people, fascinates me to know end. Even critters fascinates me. In the end I genuinely feel we need more empaths & knowledge in this world of ours with zero, absolute zero, tolerance of predators of children. As you can see I also love tangents lol. The RL was my pleasure, anytime I want to read it boom it's there. Much respect,
