and all that "well, don't beat yourself up
about it" shit
I mean, well, hell, and why not
if it was wrong
and yes, there are those
who think guilt
is a sort of psychiatric disorder
and "you shouldn't feel so bad about
it"
I'm not a monster ..

I agree one shouldn't eschew feeling guilty; it demonstrates compassion and regret, which in turn signals growth. However, I would as ( rather than not to beat yourself up ) to put yourself in the the shoes of someone ( you care about ) who's regretful about something they did in their past.
Ask yourself what you would advise.

but surely forgiveness lies in the hand of the wronged

Forgiveness isn't about anyone but self ( be it victim or perpetrator ) that we move forward by letting go of the past.
Forgiveness is a Sacred Contract of growth you have with yourself, of overcoming bad decisions by not making them again. Its not fixing the jury: It's something to be proud of.

I know nothing...I only have my beliefs and most of those are on shaky ground...so I try to be kind when possible...say sorry if I have to and pour myself a Jack...then move innocently into the next moment. A good thinking poem Paul.

forgiveness is incredibly overrated.
guilt fades away but never goes
rationalisation is the true compulsion u have to fight. guilt and forgiveness aren't opposites. guilt and carelessness are.
