The Legacy of Jennet Device

Jennet Device breathed evil into a court room in 1612
She indulged the voices of her nine year old mind
Voices telling her to denounce her family
                                                 Her neighbors
                                                 Her bloodline
            She pronounced them "witches"
                           Both men and women alike
A fitting accusation for King James' blood-lust for heretics

After Jennet's family were hung
Her demons threw a mental banquet
Reminiscent of the party her family had thrown
                        On the previous Good Friday
              Having cooked a stolen sheep
And little knowing that their youngest member was remembering faces
To later hand over to the magistrate

As Jennet watched her mother's face change color upon the gallows
The devil inside her rejoiced
Knowing that eight decades later
In a newly colonized land across the sea
Called Salem
Her testimony would be used
As a precedent
For children's testimony against the scourge
Of witchcraft and devilry
