A Funny Thing
Haven't been this way in some time
Two lane back country road
Lined with trees on the brink of a fall turn
Fog begins to lift at the birth of day
The mind drifts off to the sound of air
Moving past a poorly sealed window
Back to a time held most dear
When a smile lit up the rear view mirror
The cabin filled with a sound of a child's inquisition
A quick glance to the passenger seat
Finds endearing eyes on the same page
And a face sporting an acknowledging smile
Soft fingers fill the spaces between mine
With a gentle grip that was sure to last forever
The ping of a tire tossed stone disrupts a daydream
The void amidst my digits is painfully clear
A mirror filled only with an empty seat
Roadside treeline now made of memories and regret
The mind is a funny thing
Two lane back country road
Lined with trees on the brink of a fall turn
Fog begins to lift at the birth of day
The mind drifts off to the sound of air
Moving past a poorly sealed window
Back to a time held most dear
When a smile lit up the rear view mirror
The cabin filled with a sound of a child's inquisition
A quick glance to the passenger seat
Finds endearing eyes on the same page
And a face sporting an acknowledging smile
Soft fingers fill the spaces between mine
With a gentle grip that was sure to last forever
The ping of a tire tossed stone disrupts a daydream
The void amidst my digits is painfully clear
A mirror filled only with an empty seat
Roadside treeline now made of memories and regret
The mind is a funny thing
