"Last Night Santa Rosa Caught Fire..."

Words as I woke to a phone text that glowed
Toxic air that filled a colorless sky

Over house & neighborhood still standing.
The winds had sideswiped toward another part

As later death is still being counted
While he is grateful despite the sparse time

He had to gather anything at all
And run to speak of this another day

With smoldering homes like black & white film.
I forgot to ask if he had a dog.

Image credited to "wheel & cross", with my thanks.

This piece is entered in the DUP competition "Natural Disaster".
