"Last Night Santa Rosa Caught Fire..."
Words as I woke to a phone text that glowed
Toxic air that filled a colorless sky
Over house & neighborhood still standing.
The winds had sideswiped toward another part
As later death is still being counted
While he is grateful despite the sparse time
He had to gather anything at all
And run to speak of this another day
With smoldering homes like black & white film.
I forgot to ask if he had a dog.

great title,nice vocabulary and lines used "glowed Toxic", "death is still being counted".i like the internal thought and question that was left at the end.well penned jade tiger.keep'em coming.
Hi Sean, and welcome to DUP. The title is the first thing I saw that morning (I too am in Cali) on an early morning text sent to me by a dear friend & fellow poet who still hasn't been able to return to his home until the utilities have been restored.
I want to thank you for taking the time to drop by with your comment; down-to-earth in your observation of my work and the appreciation. As for "keep 'em coming", I've been a poet for years and have composed even from hospital beds. So I think I'll be writing a few more poems at least before I can't hold a pen or see to type on a keyboard.

Jade, you captured well the heart break of this horrendous fire season. My grandparents used to live in Santa Rosa and it was always a treat to visit them there...so beautiful. Brava!

Captured, indeed! The heartbreak and ramifications of this fire may take months to tally and years to recover. Contained but still the fires burn.
