La Reina de Los Ángeles
(translates as "the queen of the angels")
(also as "the queen of Los Angeles")
One hundred miles burned in a dead-south run
Sun blares on my left shoulder’s 1-0-1
Through flaming hills to L.A. valley’s love.
2-0-5’s gates open to 5’s long snake
The Door’s show rooms in "roadhouse woman" blue
As Buses' gun and blurt caress her flows.
Three exits out from highest crested pass
Descends where pyramid finds angels lake,
Where hell-fires’ heat perfumes in ash and her.
4-0-5’s vein that gains her valley’s wash,
A sea in rolls and waves below her cropped,
Her tan and shaven hills that spring to fire.
5’s highway push through ghosts of citrus groves;
I let that river flow in throb and rush,
For Angels’ Queen has taken me again.
