and yet presumably one is only aware that they're alive whilst they're living, and is one ever aware that they're dead, or indeed that they ever lived when they did, when they're dead ? I don't get it ..

We Live to experience what we experience when we Live. Hopefully in that experienced Living we make a difference in the world and the tiny peripheral of people we come in contact with. Maybe it's not about remembering anything as much as experiencing everything.

but without memory, it's all about living in the present, and the present is a pretty fleeting and flimsy thing, not just for me, but for everything. experience requires a past one can recall, or it's nothing at all ..     :)

But each moment is built from timbers of the past. There is no present moment that doesn't contain it.  

We Live in the present moment by not touching the hot stove because a past burn resonates through it.    

Who needs a past to recall once the experience in this flesh has expired?

children reach out to touch the stove, or the fire, because they have no experience, no recall of either .. life is a series of building blocks, and when we fail to remember the bricks it all falls down .. but we do remember! and when we're dead ? oh, forget it .. :)
