black history is to a great extent
the history of the oppressed,  
whereas white history is the history
of the oppressor,
which maybe explains why it's ok
to express black power
and why we should maybe keep quiet
about our own ..

and yet having said all that
I agree with you
in an ideal world ..   :)

History is always up for debate, it depends on who's spectacles your wearing and what you were taught. I would debate with you about the oppressor and the oppressed - I don't accept that they had a specific skin colour. anyway, the poem is seeking true equality for all regardless of history :-)

David, I will say first, I feel you quite courageous to post this...it comes across a certain way in the beginning that even had me cringe for a moment...however...continuing on to the end, I see your point but I will also say this...although I agree with Dartford, why such celebrations exist to begin with, what is celebrated is because of that very ability to overcome and have tolerance for differences, although it seems to be taking longer than it should sadly, bringing your entire point of the poem to a perfect closing. Respect all...once skin is shed, we are all the same on the inside...

I part company when celebrations turn to hate. We are being fed a daily dose of hate from the right and the left, no one better than the other. Oppression happens to the ordinary and the poor regardless of colour, this we are not told in the MSM. these are dangerous times, it seems to me that the haters are on the rise and that is something to fear more than feelings hurt :-) thank you for the read and your wise words :-)

I'm a firm believer in every life having equal value myself. That's not been the accepted norm in this country for far too long. I do believe there is a sense of vengeance in some and I can't say I blame them in the slightest...but I'm not my forefathers. I'm looking forward and beyond any color...in the end we're all part of the human race. If we stand together, hand in hand, we are much stronger. I also believe there are those who deliberately fuel the fire to keep the animosity fresh and constantly burning. And those people worry me greatly...what is their true purpose? Hate gets us nothing but more of the same. I'm all about love. Hugging you tightly for your courage and wisdom, David

I am getting awful tired of the rise in hate it's getting out of control - I wish love could be the answer, but with some people they can't see beyond the hate - I am glad I am the age I ham and probably won't live long enough to witness the oncoming slaughter :-(

.this is one of those controversial pieces that immediately provokes your readers---making them feel as if they want to instantly take sides...especially in the initial few lines of your first stanza! And yet...whether one is in favor of, or against the thoughts that are presented, you somehow created the sense of wanting to move on to the last stanza--(at least for me)to discover, at least, how the title relates to the poem itself.

And it is in your final stanza, that your most powerful point is made...and your wisdom imparted.  Indeed...when  we are able to develop the compassion, and caring, that results when we are finally able to " s e e" more with our hearts, and less with our eyes, will we truly be able to realize that concept/sense of equality.  But sadly, this realization still appears on a much too distant horizon...

a big thank you for reading this one, there are probably quite a few that didn't get past the first ten lines, which kinda adds to the whole point of the poem. There is a lot of identity assumptions out there, lots of people blinded by hate and hate makes folk stupid.
