The Negative Confession
There was no shame
in selfishness . . .
At least at first.
Living for one's self
In the age of "self-care"
Pursuing only
One's desires . . .
But when the heart
Is weighed against
The feather of truth --
The 42 judges
demand the negative confession:
The soul reflects
On all it had not done
But is consumed
With only its successes --
The sins it committed,
The transitory victories . . .
As the feather rose
The heart descended,
For the soul chose
And faced consequences unintended.

As an Egyptologist wanna-be, I love the reference to the 42 judges and feathered scale.
This evokes a very dire invoice to remit for the Life chosen to Live ( hopefully with no regrets ).

my husband is taking a mythology class -- and so I've been doing the readings along with him for fun. I thought the negative confession was such an interesting concept that defies the traditional western concept of "positive confession". I'm glad somebody picked up on it! I thought it may be too out there. yeah, I've been gone a really long time so trying to slowly work my way back up. I thought this would be an easy enough topic -- connecting Old world with new

You done good! And I'm glad you're reading along with him. Ancient Egypt has long been a magnet for me. I saw a live exhibition once and the familial energy was so overwhelming I had to leave the premises. Powerful stuff there.
