CYCLE II: FIRE

Hephaestus’ hammer fell with flames’ erupt,
With sparks that flew igniting hearts of men.
From wood to stone to bronze to iron corrupt
On furnaced edge engaging Hell’s ascend.
When molten pointed spears to others turned,
Impaled, the dead paid tax of blooded fields.
Was pow’r divined with stroke of metal burned,
From sword to muskets’ lead with fire revealed.
Was Satan’s heat not graced in cannon’s forge?
In glory, Hades brought his hell to Earth.
With sulfur’s scourge, on unblessed souls engorge
The ferry keeper’s purse, their pennies’ worth.
Hephaetus’ sparking, still its curses cast.
For now bears fire, will burn Man to his last.
