Scarecrow
I looked up to you
Those things you could do
A scarecrow in my field of dreams.
Chased away all my fears
Kept me safe all these years
I guess nothing is what it may seem.
You kept demons at bay
Yeah, you scared them away
My scarecrow stands tall in the field.
But the nightmare came true
Another version of you
One night it was finally revealed.
You tugged at my heart strings
And ripped them apart,
Would've stayed far away
If I knew from the start...
That you were a scarecrow
And you did what all scarecrows will do
Chased away all I cherished
And the life I once knew.

WOW. Words well woven. Well done connection with a scarecrow. I Identify.
Just a suggestion to keep with the 3 line stanza where you began...
You tugged at my heart strings
And ripped them apart,
(Would've stayed far away
If I knew from the start... )
Would've stayed away, if apparent from the start
That you were a scarecrow
And (you) did what (all) scarecrows will do - Maybe leave out you and all
(Chased away all I cherished
And the life I once knew.)
Chased all I cherished, a life I once knew
Just my thoughts but great way to portray any addiction...one cannot selectively numb the bad without also numbing the good. Well done.

I can relate totally to this. Not sure the ending brought the same feelings for you and it does for me <3
