Story Poem, Nr.01 — Flaming Ada
Flaming Ada loved her job
she was a Fire-Eater
performed in many circuses -
a happy human heater
she set the hearts of men ablaze
with all her daring tricks
and many would propose to her
but she’d have none of it
“I’m Flaming Ada” she’d reply
I do not need a man
and if they come too close to me
I’ll fry them if I can”
But then one day she met young Tim
a man who swallowed swords
and Ada fell in love with him
and he with her, of course
the two took daring to new heights
a double-act ensued
where she’d pre-heat the swords on stage
he’d swallow in the mood
and as his chest glowed red with fire
he would declare his love
“you are my greatest one desire
a gift from heaven above”
and she’d reply, blow fire rings
form words with curling smoke
declaring too how she loved him
and so their love was stoked
the audience loved it, every bit
they clapped and waved and cheered
especially when Tim’s chesty hairs
occasionally got seared
and when the happy couple wed
some hundreds came to see
plus thousands more who viewed it on
late Saturday’s T.V
in later years the two retired
and went to live abroad
but soon a life of leisure left
them feeling rather bored
so they would visit restaurants
she’d walk in breathing fire
and he’d toss knives and swallow them
which customers admired
the restaurant owners thought it great
and freely gave them meals
which Flaming Ada, Swordsman Tim
accepted as a deal
and when at last they both expired
as is our common fate
they ambled up and stood before
those famous Pearly Gates
the Gates were shut and Ada said
“and where the hell’s St Peter?”
but he was nowhere to be seen
he didn’t even tweet her
so Flaming Ada breathed her fire
and melted both the gates
which Tim then fashioned as a sword
and in they walked apace
then finally they spotted God
who beckoned to the two
said “welcome friends, we’re waiting here
expecting both of you
the meal is ready, table’s set
please entertain us all
we’d love to see your double-act
and then we’ll have a ball”
so Tim’s new sword was heated hot
by Flaming Ada’s fire
the two of them declared their love
with passion and desire
and God declared “such love as this
is rarely ever seen
their story must be written down
preserved by any means”
and that’s why round the world you’ll find
in peace-times and disaster
the stories of the couples who
lived happily ever after.
