Christ Was Being Rhetorical, Not Literal in the Question he Asked
Right before His Crucifixion, Christ said,
"Do you think I cannot pray to My Father and
He will provide me with more than 12 legions of angels?"(Matthew 26.53).
He was trying to calm His disciples down, put them at ease.
While it's true that Jesus could pray to the Father for angels to save Him,
God the Father's answer to that prayer would definitely be NEGATIVE !!
For it was the Father's Will was for Christ to go to the Cross,
So God would be going against His own Will if He were to grant
that hypothetical request and send the angels to set Christ free.
The words of that old hymn go like this,
"He could have called ten thousand angels
to destroy the world and set Him free"
Yes, He could have called them, but NO, NO, NO,
they wouldn't have come and obeyed Him.
For it would have been against the Father's Will
So what was Christ doing, by asking that question?
Well that's just it. He didn't put it in the form
of a statement but in terms of a question.
For if He had said,
I can pray to My Father and He will send ...
That would be a straight-up lie.
But Christ avoids that by simply asking the question,
"Do you think I cannot pray...?"
Which by definition is NOT a statement, and so is not a lie..
Yes, at a time of great stress, Christ sought relief by playing a game.
Perhaps, He's setting an example for us to follow -
We should use humor to lessen the pain..
When we're in an overwhelming situation.
PS: If Christ rebelled against God the Father
By refusing to go to the cross,
He would have become like Lucifer.
And any angels that joined Jesus in His revolt
would have become like the angels
that joined Satan's own mad insurrection !!
