Image for the poem My Angel

My Angel

 it wasn't simply her beauty
a strange, aching kind of beauty
eyes set too far away from each other
exciting brown eyes
her face
seemed to shift when I looked
when she didn't know I was looking
her mouth
set off the face
when she smiled it seemed too wide
exciting
telling of secrets she wanted to find
seduced me
with virginal innocence
I looked beyond that innocence
found raw sexuality
so much so
you would dare not confess to
but it was there
I saw in Nanette unconquered desire
for life
hungrily she thirsted for it
so reserved was she
still
I saw starvation for
the down-and-dirty with the right one
me
the kind of carnality which happens
on wet nights
in seedy rooms
sweaty, hot and glorious upheaval of the norm
whiskey and desire
coursing through artery's

Nanette
a pious woman
a good woman
tasted the other side
even as she maintained her pride
and innocence

like an angel
