The Great Escape
It begins again with a smack
That brings resignation but not tears
She cried herself out long ago at his hands
And now only feels sorry
She isn’t sure who she feels sorry for any longer
Herself or him,
He is a sad and scared man
Scared to lose what he lost long ago
In times when he isn’t home she has
Squirreled away her traveling clothes
And today she will use them
Not sure where she will go but sure she will
And he comes home angry again
Only this time finds his house empty
And his victim no longer there
To be willing
And he cries
That brings resignation but not tears
She cried herself out long ago at his hands
And now only feels sorry
She isn’t sure who she feels sorry for any longer
Herself or him,
He is a sad and scared man
Scared to lose what he lost long ago
In times when he isn’t home she has
Squirreled away her traveling clothes
And today she will use them
Not sure where she will go but sure she will
And he comes home angry again
Only this time finds his house empty
And his victim no longer there
To be willing
And he cries
