hanging out with you today

a much needed break  
from the rat race  
broke up the monotony  
 
the endless round  
of doctor visits  
and the sick bed…  
 
time together…  
but impeded  
treasured nonetheless
 
characterized by talk  
and laughter  
secrets shared  
good food  
our now-ritual watermelon  
 
proof we’re not too old  
for the giggles  
or causing mischief  
no alcohol required
 
even blinded by bones  
and seeking crones  
we maintain our sangfroid  
throughout the fray  
 
remembered days  
of false bravado  
flirting…  
despite damaged self-esteem
 
too long  
since last we did this  
too long by far
