The Words that You Say
You did it again without provocation or cause
Your words shot to the core of me and reopened my scars
Your concern were your emotions, never mind mine
Your tongue wielded power that reduced me to slime
After repeated incident I still hope for the best
In order to avoid this pain in my chest
After a moment you’ll reflect and say that you’re sorry
But I can’t move past it, your voice is too jarring
For I know in that moment you meant what you said
Not a passing comment or a skin to be shed
Do you know in that moment you reveal who you are?
The memory sticks worse than sap or black tar
Try as I might to shake off what you say
Each time it happens I relive every single day
My empathy is strained through the limits of reason
My heart needs to live in a more temperate season
Your words shot to the core of me and reopened my scars
Your concern were your emotions, never mind mine
Your tongue wielded power that reduced me to slime
After repeated incident I still hope for the best
In order to avoid this pain in my chest
After a moment you’ll reflect and say that you’re sorry
