Loving From A Safe Distance
Where I once felt the thunderous passion in your heart
Spoken telepathically over great distances,
I seldom sense the faintest emotion from you now.
I know you still love me,
I know you still care...
And would sense a great void if I no longer existed in your world.
But gone are the days where I
Could feel our souls reaching for each other
From across the room....
Even across the miles that stretched out between us.
Did you feel it, too?
Was I just imagining it?
If I drew you a picture of what my heart felt and saw,
would you recognize it as a truth you once knew for yourself?
I recount these experiences
Not in the hopes of breathing life back
Into what has been through the death throes more than once,
But to look back upon the landscape of emotion
Both our hearts have traversed.
Loving safely in the knowledge that I was already spoken for,
But anxious at the thought of losing the love
You knew I harbored for you.
The days, weeks and months spent in each other's company,
Carefully skirting the edge between love and friendship...
Often finding our hearts ensnared and entangled once again.
We have never been very good at hiding our love.
Friends don't gaze upon each other as we do
Or need each other's presence in the same way we have.
I count you as one of my most treasured loves.
Your heart is the one I would die without.
Friends we must be, but soul mates we are.
We love
We learn
We grow
The connection we have is real.
Everyone who knows us sees it....
Thinking we have known each other a very long time....
To which I say..."only 18 months...in this lifetime."
