Our pledge of love
Why should it be that doubts should so assail me,
This day should be one of bright joy and delight,
But a harsh and barren world is all I see,
And my life is drained of all colour and light.
Around me all is cold and grey like the sky,
Its pale hues seeping like rain into my heart.
Sometimes I think it might be better to die,
As a silent scream of pain tears me apart.
Oh my darling, I have given you my name,
Promising to bring you naught but happiness,
Yet time and again, to my eternal shame
My unkind words bring you nothing but distress.
But forgiveness is your nature, my dear wife,
And your devotion and love beyond compare.
With your gentle words restoring me to life,
And with sweet caresses healing my despair.
So let us celebrate this Valentine's Day,
And pledge anew our eternal covenant.
Though time will pass and our bodies will decay,
Our love will always be holy sacrament.
