monkey buy monkey sell
an after-eight slides over my nose
while the cider settles into
stomach pit bellyache
warming my knotted innards
contentment my enemy
sidle up beside me
say nothing while not getting a round in
do not think that the heat
is boiling you like a frog
(it is
do not say it)
though i smell like sweat
and tester perfumes
i believe in the ache of my feet
i am good
i am grand
flexing atrophied tongue muscles
pinning an 80-watt smile on my cheeks
and a badge on my chest
it seems so real
for one moment
and another
until one power pose,
team shout,
throwaway compliment later
i buy it all
