tentatively

the rain fell so hard it bounced
off the pavement
it was just like my heart beat
sometimes softer
sometimes it would pump so hard that it would
fall
back to the ground

the water splashes at her feet
and she is singing
and
I think she's only out there
to hide

the words are breaking
they are hoarse
and she is kneeling now
looking up

the water fills her

there is this moment where
the sky flashes brilliant
purple
above the treeline

and I am watching her
as she wishes
that the rain fell harder

as I am terrified and amazed
but I
am only watching her

she doesn't know I can hear
her choking
she doesn't know that
when I hit the pavement

I do not bounce
