American Slavery As a Betrayal of the Protestant Reformation

Slavery in which Blacks worked without pay was bad enuff.
But in addition it was against the law for anyone
to teach them how to read and write!!
This denial of education was a total betrayal
of the PROTESTANT REFORMATION.

Why was the Protestant Reformation was so successful?
Its genius was that it called for universal literacy -
So that everybody, rich or poor, could read the Bible !!

In contrast, the Roman Catholic approach was that peasants
and slaves were better off illiterate, more docile that way.
The priests' view was that, "A little knowledge
is a dangerous thing," especially about the Bible.
They didn't want the lower classes to become "uppity."
Illiteracy was a logical way to keep them in their place  -  humble.
Nothing can raise your self esteem as much as
learning how to read (except learning how to fight).

While Protestant nations never reached their goal of universal literacy,
Whatever percentage of the population was literate in Catholic countries,
In the Protestant nations the percentage was TWICE as high, at least.

And America, outside of the Spanish and French colonies, was Protestant.
So when Black slaves in British America were kept by law from learning how to read,
This was like treason, a complete abandonment of American Protestant principles !!
Slave-holding plantation owners basically put profit above God and religion.
It's as if they became Catholics as far as their slave-owning was concerned.

By not letting their slaves read the Apostle Paul's writings,
They were, in effect, going against his gospel, opposing it.
And Paul wrote that "if anyone preach another gospel, let him
be anathema, that is to say, Let him be accursed"(Galatians 1.8-9).

My guess is that the curse ("anathema") that Paul pronounced
Has truly fallen on the USA already in terms of the resistance
to education that exists in some Black neighborhoods in the inner cities,
Plus the growth of welfare dependency means fewer tax dollars.
Money that should go to National Defense, goes to social programs instead.
Our nuclear arsenal has shrunk as a result - not a good.sign of things to come.

Finally, the accursedness will take the form of Nuclear War
 -  Russian Attack on America - !!
Not that depriving slaves of education 200 years ago
is the only reason for it, of course.
Rather, this abominable betrayal of Protestantism
in the distant past is just one of a number of offenses:
Abortion, homosexuality, drug abuse, pornography, racism.
Why bother, then, to address it?
Because it isn't as obvious, as well-known, as the other offenses.

PS: I touched on the Protestant principle of universal literacy.
("So that everyone can read the Bible," were Tyndale's words).
But once they could do that much, they also read other books.
Their self esteem was raised, their aspirations expanded.
The difference between the RC society and the Protestant world
(In the 1600s-1700s-1800s but not so much nowadays)
was like the difference between a flat bag of unpopped popcorn
and that same bag after it's been microwaved into a round, bulging bag !!
Aspirations "exploded" due to the power of the Protestant Reformation.
