Kerouac burnout
Springsteen hopped a Cadillac for Tijuana
& took Dylan along for harmonica backup
it’s a long ride down the road to nowhere
but we gotta be there when they free the hostages
we can orchestrate our own hipster punk crusade
get high on thunderbird & lemonade
smoke guamura till we fade to grey
‘cause all the good films were made in black&white
I’m looking for a new gig
anyplace where they don’t know my name
maybe I can set up a poetry thrift shop
at a truck stop this side of the Potomac
I booked a room at the Hotel California
we’ll get low & burn down the night
drift to the neverland in our tattoos
& I’ll keep you close in my be-bop dream
made for lovers
there’s a girl who only comes around
when I’m passed out drunk
but I’ll meet her sometime
at a carnival or a sidewalk café
& when she asks me if I love her
I won’t know what to say
I’ll be there when you read this
& when the little guy’s getting billy-clubbed by the cops
where men stand in line at the soup kitchen
‘cause there ain’t no work
women & kids dressed in rags I’ll be there
& when they pour the sacramental wine
made from the bitter grapes of Wrath
I’ll be there…
