Love Rhythms (Dancing After Dark)
There is a drumbeat
In this heartbeat
And
It has me awake
Fast like a racehorse
Sharp as a thunderclap
Steady as the heat of a simmering stew
Coming down slow like a spring "planter's rain"
It's the echo of a lullaby, hummed under her breath as she sleeps
Staccato, and stutterstep.
Hail falling on a rooftop
A whistling snore, with undertones of new Pine meeting a freshly-honed saw
Aggravating in its existence, yet soothingly consistent
A leaky faucet in the sink
that denies me the slumber I seek
Tap. Drip. Plop. Boom. Bip, bap. Dip, dap. Hit. Slap. Plink.
It really has me awake now
I touch her.
Pull the sheets away from her glistening skin in time to the notes she now moans
I lay my hot face
against her warm place
Breathe in. And breathe out. Feel her stir.
Working with the motion of her legs as I redirect the pace of her breathing with my tongue. And the contact makes and breaks with a sticky, slurping, suckling sound
I walk my fingers down her thigh. Feel the pulse in each tip answer her heart's whump with a thump-bump.
I look to her shoulder
The skin at her collar bone jumps as the blood beneath it races quickly by
My eyes roam her loveliness. Watch her chest rise and fall swiftly. Find the cadence of her heart in the moment between exhale and intake.
Breath barely taken, I count the beats. Mark the time as her shifting foot rocks to and fro.
I tap a slow dance beneath her breasts in the brief space between her kiss on my face and her tentative touches upon my chest.
I bang the drum in that gap when she pushes me back for a beat then draws me again tightly to her and matches the squeeze of her muscles to the speed of my strokes
I feel it. I follow it.
I seek. Find the rhythm.
Match it. Expand it. Build upon it.
Merge with it. Surge with it. Control it and yield to it.
Rewrite its flow to the tune of the song in my soul.
I let what is me and what is she become a new thing called we.
Creating the music to our special song.
Just tapping
and dancing
and bopping
and drumming along.
