ANTHEM FOR A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN (SATIRICAL)
I first wrote this in 1988 during the then US Presidential election campaign between Bush Senior and Dukakis to succeed Reagan, a season which coincided with the more successful launch of the Space Shuttle. Wonder if times have really changed that much? Singable to tune of "The Star Spangled Banner" (no offence intended about the US national anthem).
Politicians are strange,
They do not really change;
Of lies they tell much, of the truth but a fraction,
Make compassionate words,
Patriotical lauds,
And promises not always put into action.
They treat you like brother
But snipe at each other
With 'war wimp' and 'hawk', 'invalid' and like talk.
They promise to cure everything
With their ideas of sound budgeting.....
Never mind the White House race,
I'll go shuttling to space!
