Watermelon Lollipops
Do you remember when we first met?
You gave me a watermelon lollipop
And a smile that remained etched into my memory
For years to come.
You held my hand on the way home,
And kissed me sweetly on the porch
Under the porch light's watching eye
(We both ignored the giggles from inside).
On Valentines Day the sky was weeping,
And you lent me your bright pink rain coat.
We arrived at yours soaked to the bone
And laughing at a sodden cat
And dripping clothes.
Do you remember the bells chiming
As we walked down the aisle?
(Unlike the first time,
The second didn't involve the minister
Being your beloved soft toy).
When the sky rumbled
Our bed would be overun by trembling children
And a whimpering dog,
And you would tell us how the clouds were hungry
And looking for monsters to eat,
And that the thunder was only the clouds' rumbling tummies.
Do you remember,
How we giggled as our child had their own porch moment,
How they had their own wedding,
And how we walked them down the aisle?
Do you remember
When our faces weren't painted with wrinkles?
When our hair was bright
And our eyes brighter,
And when they still sold the watermelon lollipops
At the dairy on the corner?
You gave me a watermelon lollipop
And a smile that remained etched into my memory
For years to come.
You held my hand on the way home,
And kissed me sweetly on the porch
Under the porch light's watching eye
(We both ignored the giggles from inside).
