east of A'ts'ina
the crows take shelter in the juniper trees
& the nightsongs blow in the wind
the trumpets wail & the rains come down
& the angels tell us we’ve sinned
the highway ends at a sullen motel
in the womb of a dangerous sky
we cling to the sheets of a hedonist bed
knowing every kiss is a lie
embrace any lover to swallow & save us
like sailors adrift in the sea
naked lust in the eyes of a beautiful girl –
darlin’, you’re no better than me
the spirits of star-crossed innamorati
still chained in the canyon’s box
raiders in the west have carved their tears
& poems in the words on the rocks
I’ve abandoned women as they wept my name
& I curse my heart as they stone me
I’ve squandered my dreams in the gamble of love –
but you can’t get a fix for lonely…
