A Bawdy Bar Brawl
The girl with the dark blue voice sings through cigarette smoke
Bawdy patrons at the bar laugh loud at his bawdy joke
Raucous jeering ringing out so ignorant and rude
Gesticulates towards the girl in a manner dark and crude
Ignores her bluesy melody and her gentle lilting voice
His arrogance is stinging but she doesn’t have a choice
So she smiles to the few that listen lilting to the jazz
This job pays her food and lodging, it’s the only thing she has
But bawdy isn’t satisfied lets loose a great guffaw
Shouts why y’all a-listening to this skinny wailing whore?
Young man further down the bar quietly objects
Says hey shut up I wanna hear, please, show her some respect
Bawdy now turns ugly and draws a switchblade knife
Young fella says put that away or I may take your life
Ignoring warning he attacks thrusting at the young man’s head
Two shots ring out he staggers about then Bawdy falls down dead
Folks rush screaming for the exists young man don’t give a damn
Says I come especially the hear you carry on please ma’am
There’s just her and the pianist so she sings for him alone
From that day folks listen now she’s loved by Al Capone
