Winter Winds

She felt numb as she drags her
feet in the late November snow
the cold wind blew her damped
hair showing an almost bare soul
she wanted to dry her eyes
but her tears overflowing like
a river that never runs dry
she feels utterly helpless

She couldn’t bear to look back
for any chance of delay could only
prolong the much awaited escape
her time to fly has come and she
has to endure the long flight after
many years of enemy’s captivity
and for the first time in her life
liberation is within grasp

Her footsteps a pounding beat
in a maniacal rush, she can’t afford
to lose precious seconds of inviting
freedom, the sunrise starting to
reveal its warmth at the horizon
and the darkness that hinders her
presence slowly fades away as
the first sight of dawn approaches

Beauty has betrayed her beyond
imagination, if only she weighed
the reasons clouding her mind
she will be spared from misery
now as she reflects from the past
she cannot even remember a time
when she felt happy, a time when
even pain can make her smile

The scent of moist air like incense
that excites her once muted senses
as calmness consumed every fibers
of her being, the brightness of sun
blinds her less acquainted eyes
she tried to grab to something to
steady herself, but darkness had
already taken her into slumber
