Girl in the street
So I'm standing in the gritty noise and hurry of the city,
and I'm looking at the crowd that flows like water down the street.
When by chance I see a vision - that's the cause of my collision
with the people in my path as I turn my head to look.
Just a single flash of colour makes the world around seem duller,
like a candle in the darkness of the people rushing by.
And it makes my mind start drifting as the crowds around are shifting,
see it's you that I'm still watching while the world is spinning past.
There's one single ray of sunlight that is holding you in my sight,
turns your hair to flowing silk and your eyes to shining stars.
And I know that it's a cliche and the kind of thing they all say,
but I'm captured and enraptured by your teasingly sweet smile.
Now I see you looking my way and it's shaking up my whole day,
'cause you're staring into my eyes as I'm staring into yours.
There's so many things I'd tell you, there's so many things we could do,
If the flow of crowds and strings of life weren't keeping us apart.
And I feel the grey clouds massing with each person I am passing,
as I bow my head and carry on the road I always walk.
Guess that sometimes you don't get the chance to ask the girl if she will dance
with you - instead you've got to act like there was nothing there.
Then I'm turning and I'm running, pushing through the crowd and stunning,
all the people in the huddled mass I'm parting as I move.
And then you're right there before me, and though the rest ignore me,
I don't see them, I just see you, standing staring in my eyes.
Now we're in the street just kissing and both of us are dismissing
the background crowd and hurry that is flowing round us both.
And we've got the strangest feeling - one our kisses are revealing,
that the world is spinning round us 'stead of merely spinning past.
After all, there's no use playing by the rules the world keeps saying,
sometimes there's things too important for the world to come between/
And I'll break all the rules every time, if it will mean that you'll be mine,
for every single second that life will give us both.
(As I write this I am talking to that girl I saw while walking,
and each minute I'm more grateful that I saw her than the last
For I'd sell off everything I own, I'd give up wealth or name or throne,
to simply be with her some more - that one girl in the street).
