She breezes by, with beauty rare,
And so sublime, with features fair-
She leaves him smitten, standing there;
He yearns to ask, but does he dare?
Offers to the pantheon,
Snubbed by the Penates,
Reduced to mundane bits and baubles
Merely mock his fantasies....
With practised ease, the blow is struck-
The vanquished suitor curses luck.
He toes a pebble through the dust,
And contemplates this hapless lust:
The smugly saprophytic heart,
The basilisk of dreams,
And the moonlight's ressurection
Of fermented memories.
