The Past, Punctuated

In the beginning were the question marks:
Who are you? Where are you from?
What is going to happen
In this thing that we've begun?

It all seemed so perfect
The laughs and the smiles
The texts of good morning and
I've been thinking of you a while

Next came apostrophes
I was yours, you were mine
And we covered a lot of distance
In a short amount of time

Surprise, exclamation points
Bundle of joy and an engagement
But in parentheses 2nd thoughts
About this new arrangement

The years began to drag
And you showed your true colors
In the quotation marks of things
Screamed from one to the other

Feeling trapped in an ellipsis
Was there something more to come?
But inside I knew the days
Of that old thing we're done

The amount of commas as I listed
Things I could live with no more
Provided all the keys I needed
To unlock the exit door

Now there's just a period
It happened, it's a fact
And after living that nightmare
Thank God; no going back

Close the cover on this book
Put it back on the shelf
I've got new paper and a pen
To start fresh on something else
