Unopened Gifts

I made you a present
Of paper and string
Carefully crafted with
Hours of patience

I gave you my virtue
Surrendering the one thing
Only a woman can give
Into unsteady hands

I bought it all
The promises and vows
The love and the dream
The madness and the mayhem

I imagined nights
Lying in bed and laughing
Drinking whiskey from the bottle
Until we could not stop our hands
From wandering

This was supposed to be
My dream of unsheltered love
You and me on a journey
That takes us everywhere

Such a shame you
Turned aside at the last minute
Afraid to be my everything
When I had given all to you
