Should Have Known Better
I knew I shouldn't do it
But I did it anyway
Fingering my way through
Crevasses and cracks
To find the bits
That needed to be found
Right now right then
With all their edges
Rough and ready
For the coming swell
Of tempt and treat
Like little dolls
In life-size minds
And daring not to tell
What they're in for
Alleged or true
Not wanting to confess
Impress or influence
For good or ill
The ones who visit
Looking for it
That thing
They could not find at home
Scared, hopeful
Taking a chance
On life and alternatives
All one and the same
When it comes to living
Imperfect no regrets
'It is what it is'.
But I did it anyway
Fingering my way through
Crevasses and cracks
To find the bits
That needed to be found
Right now right then
With all their edges
Rough and ready
For the coming swell
Of tempt and treat
Like little dolls
In life-size minds
And daring not to tell
What they're in for
Alleged or true
Not wanting to confess
Impress or influence
For good or ill
The ones who visit
Looking for it
That thing
They could not find at home
Scared, hopeful
Taking a chance
On life and alternatives
All one and the same
When it comes to living
Imperfect no regrets
'It is what it is'.
