Goliath's Throne
Goliath felt the stone for a brief agonising moment
Then as the dust and the living fled from the falling dead
David clutched the priest like a tyrant holds his people and said
Tell all weak enough to kneel that famine rides not in this city
The priest knew from the past
Not to contest a giant
When the flesh was stolen from Goliath's bones
David took an axe to Goliath's spine
Sending his skull to the carpenters
The priest watched David crush every other bone with a hammer
And a breeze stole Goliath from a worse king
The carpenters carved a throne David sat in all too well
The priest asked David
Have you no faith in something bigger than yourself
David replied
I did once upon a time
Then I cast the last stone
Then as the dust and the living fled from the falling dead
David clutched the priest like a tyrant holds his people and said
Tell all weak enough to kneel that famine rides not in this city
The priest knew from the past
Not to contest a giant
When the flesh was stolen from Goliath's bones
David took an axe to Goliath's spine
Sending his skull to the carpenters
The priest watched David crush every other bone with a hammer
And a breeze stole Goliath from a worse king
The carpenters carved a throne David sat in all too well
The priest asked David
Have you no faith in something bigger than yourself
David replied
I did once upon a time
Then I cast the last stone
