Worthy Adversary
I have a worthy adversary,
Capable of giving fits.
We both striving for the same thing,
Though one hardly admits.
And I have looked into those eyes,
With hate at first, then awe.
Guess it shouldn’t have been surprise
The love in there I saw.
A gentle heart I had picked at…
My sole intent to hurt.
I question now my every act,
And “my own” just deserts.
The prize we fight for unstable
From one day to the next,
Trying to keep both at table…
Unaware the pretext.
I see it all, my own heart strained
To justify my ends.
But know the truth, however pained,
We will never be friends.
And so, alas, I bow my head…
Reward yours to esteem.
As you pick up ev’ry last shred
Of my one—my only dream.
